Neurobiological variability and consistency across individuals with common psychiatric disorders

Ashlea Segal works with Professors Nenad Sestan (Neuroscience) and Avram Holmes (Psychiatry, Rutgers University). Throughout her career, she strives to “move the needle” in mental health by improving our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying psychiatric illnesses at an individual level. She completed her PhD at Monash University (Australia) in 2023. During her PhD, Ashlea used neuroimaging to reveal significant neurobiological variability among individuals with shared psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia. Now, in her postdoctoral research, she is expanding this work by integrating multiscale data—ranging from genetics and cellular biology to behavior, cognition, and environmental factors. This approach aims to offer a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of neurobiological variability and consistency across individuals with common psychiatric disorders.
